Math Literature?!?!

Another week, another post for the Virtual Curriculum Fair and Homeschooling Hearts and Minds!

I have a first child who is a voracious reader.  But she is also a voracious "read me a story"-er.  Her younger sister seems to be following right behind, and would much rather have stories read to her than sit at a desk and do work!  That means that no matter what subject we are studying, I try to incorporate a variety of quality picture books (see my post about my favorite source for books about books) and novels  that relate to the subject we are studying.  Yes, even for math.

This will be a short post, because as any homeschooler knows, DON'T REINVENT THE WHEEL!  

This website, www.livingmath.net, has taken all of the guesswork out of finding math-related books.  While I think it could be organized a bit better, take a minute to dig through the lists (conveniently linked to Amazon so you can check out reviews) and I'm sure you'll find a book on one of the math topics you are currently working on your homeschool.  Our favorite "mathy" authors are Mitsumasa Anno, Greg Tang, Cindy Neuschwander (the Sir Cumference Series) and Demi.  

Reading books (and playing math related games) helps to engage the younger children and those whose learning styles might not be so "pen and paper" oriented.  Although I love our math curriculum, Math U See, variety is the spice of life, and taking one day a week where we play math games and read math books really takes the drudgery out of what could be a more "boring" subject.  I hope you find the Living Math website as helpful as I do!
